Summary

This game was developed as part of a group project during my game development studies. The course focused on learning to create a polished couch co-op experience. This includes full controller support and engaging player-versus-player mechanics. We also learned how to collaborate effectively as a team using industry-standard tools and workflows.

Unreal  |  C++  |  Perforce  |  HacknPlan

My Role

I programmed the main mechanics of our game which includes ship control, boat combat and the game flow systems. I also handled the integration of audio into the game, including sound effects and music triggers.

Challenges & Highlights

I did not have any prior experience in creating a fully polished game in Unreal Engine using C++, neither did any of my team members. This project pushed us far outside our comfort zones. We had to quickly get up to speed with Unreal’s architecture and collaborate closely to solve problems. It was challenging but incredibly rewarding! I now feel much more confident using Unreal Engine with C++.

Next to that, we had never worked in group before nor with one another. Although this was a hardship that was difficult to overcome, we learned quickly on how to communicate with each other and how to work efficiently. I couldn’t be prouder of our group and what we have accomplished!

What I Learned

This project taught me how to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team of programmers and artists, manage version control with Perforce, and contribute to a fully playable and polished product from concept to release.
